Rear Tine Tillers
Rear tine tillers are definitely worth looking into, if you’re looking to buy a garden cultivator. They tend to be able to take on the hard jobs of the garden, more so than some of the front-tine cultivators.
And although rear tine garden tillers can be used in any size garden, they may be “overkill” if you have just a tiny plot. Unless, of course, your soil could double as concrete!
Rear Tine Tillers
What exactly are rear-tine tillers? First off, know that cultivators some in three main styles:
- Rear Tine: As you move foreward, the tine blades are behind the wheels.
- Front Tine: As you move forward, the tines are in front of the wheels.
- Wheel-less: These types of cultivators are light, so they have no wheels.
In general, the wheel-less tillers are best suited to loamy or sandy soils, and small garden plots (say, 100 square feet).
For a rear tine tiller, by having the wheels up in front of the tines, the tires can grab onto the un-tilled soil and pull forwards a little bit easier. They also tend to be heartier machines.
Front tine tillers are well suited for medium-sized gardens, with soil that is somewhat compacted (just not quite to concrete status). They are heavier-duty than the wheel-less cultivators, but a bit less developed compared to rear tine tillers.
