Electric Tiller – Should You or Shouldn’t You Buy One?

An electric tiller is a great convenience for the occasional gardener.  Having no gas cans to lug around is a great feature in itself.  But an electric garden tiller also has some drawbacks.  Let’s look at the pros and cons before you shop!

When it comes to pros and cons for these garden cultivators, let’s look at the cons first; really there are only only two.

  • Lighter-duty:  These tillers aren’t meant for challenging soils.
  • Less tilling time:  Since they are electrically powered, they operate for shorter periods at a time.

So those are the cons; now let’s look at the flip side — the pros.

  • Lighter weight:  Since these aren’t “monster tillers” they are easier on your back.  Not to mention easier to get to and from the garden with it!
  • Smaller footprint:  If you’re looking to till a narrow space, these are great; as small as 9 inches wide.
  • Variable speeds:  Many can be adjusted from light tilling to digging.

These kinds of garden cultivators are excellent for a weekend gardener who has a small plot of soil.  For example, if you want to till a flower bed in preparation for planting, that has already been dug up.

One thing you need to consider; some of the electric garden tillers are not cordless. This means that if the tiller isn’t cordless, you need to carefully consider how far your garden is away from an available electrical outlet.

Now there aren’t a ton of electric tillers out there on the market, but there are some nice selections available. The Mantis tiller is probably the best-known of the electric garden cultivators, but don’t write off the others before you take a look and compare features (and prices).
